Current Research

  1. The female to male ratio (F:M) in multiple sclerosis (MS) has risen sharply; this is believed to reflect environment changes affecting females. We are updating the original recurrence risk data (published in 1988) to determine the impact of this potential environmental change on the actual risks; to provide information for genetic & reproductive counselling, and for therapy. This is funded by unrestricted grants from Teva, Biogen, Novartis, Sanofi Genzyme.
  2. Collaboration with molecular genetic researcher at UBC (Dr. Carles Vilarino-Guell, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Medical Genetics) to identify genes involved in MS susceptibility, cause and disease course.
  3. Canadian MS Pregnancy Prospective Cohort Study (CANPREG-MS) is established to include pregnant women with MS and MS women planning a pregnancy. This will result in evidence-based information critical to the decision-making process about reproductive options. This study is funded by an unrestricted grant from Biogen MA Inc.
